Sound design for GAG
I plan to have a number of audio devices set up on wooden stands around the space, each under a paper hood to hide the hardware a bit, and contributing to a general abstract soundtrack. This is for the opening night of the show, and perhaps a closing night if that happens.
In a past volume of Botanical Readiness, I asked for "minimalist psychedelia", which I'd like to revisit. Typically, if I do audio work for BR, I make noise. But for this show, from multiple sound sources, noise (and drones) will probably just get lost in the overall social noise of a GAG opening. Pointillistic and momentary sounds might work better to cut through everyone's chatter, although it's fine if sounds require getting close to the speaker to really become audible.
I've been taking inspiration lately from agro-acoustics:
The actual sounds aren't so significant, but I really like the idea of sound compositions that don't seem deliberately composed by a human (nor computationally generated) and doesn't quite fit into the category of "field recording" things that did require some technological intervention to exist as sounds for us.
Recordings
All of the soundtracks (and I'm anticipating at least 5 speakers from 5 artists) will be running simultaneously, so you can get away with a loop, but it should be a few minutes at least. A longer SDTK might have periods of quiet sound or even silence. I don't anticipate any visitors to do any real dedicated listening the show will be primarily the opening and closing event, and there will almost always be chatter. GAG tends to be a rather social space as galleries go.
Hardware
I'll be building wood stands for the playback equipment, and I don't have a budget for the latter. If you're in, let me know what sort of hardware you can supply for that evening (and the closing, if it happens). I'm assuming a bluetooth speaker and an old portable player, or whatever you might have lying around.
Each sound artists will have one single stand, so I assume that rules out stereo recording. Also, I would need to know if you will require an outlet.
Vol. 5 expansion
Once the GAG show is done with, I would like sound work to be entries into Botanical Readiness Vol. 5 in May, with more elaboration: additional sound, text and image context, lore, etc.
